Julián Castro Slams Trump's "Deranged" Immigration Policies After Escorting Asylum Seekers to Border
Staff | democracynow.org | 2019-10-09
On Monday, 2020 presidential candidate Julián Castro escorted a dozen asylum seekers to the U.S. port of entry at Brownsville, Texas, in a challenge to President Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy. The group included a disabled Salvadoran woman and her relatives, as well as nine LGBTQ people from Cuba, Guatemala and Honduras. Many of them report they've been threatened and assaulted while they've been forced to wait in the Mexican border city of Matamoros. The asylum seekers were refused entry into the United States. Castro speaks with us from San Antonio, where he served as mayor from 2009 to 2014.

Bojo Goes Bonkers: Two Borders Will Divide Ireland From Northern Ireland
Kenneth Surin | counterpunch.org | 2019-10-09
Brexit would have (the non-EU) UK share a border with (the EU-member) Ireland, and the EU does not countenance a flexible border (tariff-free, free movement of peoples, etc.) between itself and non-EU countries– unless the UK strikes an agreement with the EU similar to the one Norway has. But that would amount to a soft Brexit, which of course is absolutely unacceptable to hardline Brexiters.

Twitter Rakes in Cash From Anti-Immigrant Bigots
Ilana Novick | truthdig.com | 2019-10-08
The group's name is bland enough: Federation for Immigration Reform (FAIR). It doesn't explain its specific position on immigration–it could want to expand or limit it, but the word reform doesn't tell us anything either way. That meaningless name is helpful for evading scrutiny, which is perhaps why, as Alex Kotch reports in Sludge, the "prominent anti-immigrant organization has spent $934,000 on Twitter ads, and Twitter sees no problem with this." | A little under $1 million in promoted tweets over a few years might not seem like a lot of…

As he plunges the country into chaos, Boris Johnson thinks the royals need a new yacht
Peadar O'Cearnaigh | thecanary.co | 2019-10-08
The UK is just over three weeks away from the great uncertainity of leaving the EU on 31 October. And, given the reaction of the Irish government and the EU to Boris Johnson's 'two-border' exit proposal, you could be forgiven for thinking the Tories aren't taking this seriously. Or maybe they're simply out of touch. Politicians that care about people would see the urgency to bring about change. But Boris Johnson takes a different approach…

Why Closing the Congo-Rwanda Border Could Spread Ebola

One evening, as I laid low in a compound bordering the no man's land between Congo and Rwanda, I peeked over the wall as a chora chora plied his trade. Trump's Anti-Immigration Policies Are a Deepening of Previous Admin Policies

As Man Dies in ICE Custody, California Moves to Ban For-Profit Prisons, Including Immigrant Jails

A Cameroonian immigrant died this week in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in California. The man, identified as 37-year-old Nebane Abienwi, died on Tuesday after suffering a brain hemorrhage. This comes as California lawmakers passed a bill last month that would ban private prisons statewide, a major blow to the for-profit prison industry in the U.S. that is deeply entangled in immigration detention. The legislation also orders the closure of four ICE prisons that can jail up to 4,500 immigrants. The bill is currently awaiting the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom, who said in his January…
